Our Story
Obuyisi bw’omu initiative is a not-for profit Community Based Organization that was founded in
2020 by a group of four passionate youths, born and raised in urban slums. The founders
recognized the dire challenges facing impoverished informal settlements, from lack of clean
drinking water, poor waste disposal, sky rocketing illiteracy rates especially among the girls,
increasing instances of mental health and its related issues, drug abuse and how the effects of
climate change had impacted communities, post COVID 19 stressors, this group took the
initiative to take action and do something about all these concerns that had become a common
occurrence in the communities.
With impoverished informal settlements in and around areas of Wakiso and Kampala silently
succumbing to these social injustices, the responsible authorities paid little or no attention to
them because these people were at the bottom of the food chain. It was through this realization
that Obuyisi Bw’omu Initiative was birthed as a step towards transformation to prosperity in the
different fields like W.A.S.H (water, sanitation & health), bridging the gender gap through
empowering young women, bursting myths associated with mental health and women related
issues like menstrual hygiene.
Today Obuyisi Bw’omu Initiative is not only surviving but thriving. Through its vast array of
services, it seeks to bring hope to those who had none especially the youth. It intends to carry out
campaigns on the importance of protecting the available water sources and by far soliciting
affordable water to the urban poor and also educate them on proper disposal of waste, provide
scholastic materials to the underprivileged children with a special emphasis on the girl child
because if you educate a girl, you educate a nation not leaving out children with special needs.
You can imagine someone failing to attend school because they lack basic scholastic materials,
talking about mental health as any other illness hence demystifying the myth around it.
The bottom line is that Obuyisi Bw’omu Initiative aims to change the narrative that once you
lose hope, you are on your own. It strives to help people make meaningful progress by bridging
gaps and contributing to the growth and empowerment of communities in informal settlements.
Their success is a powerful reminder that we can do a lot with very little. A small, dedicated, and
passionate group of people can make a significant difference in their community and drive
lasting, positive change.
